Footnote:
324 | To Speak – Set in Row, Put in Order, Arrange Strong’s #1696, dabar. This very common word appearing 1144 times is translated as “speak” but properly means to put in order, arrange, sequence. According to Gesenius, “The primary power as the etymologists in Holland long ago rightly observed, is that of setting in a row, ranging in order.” (Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon 1846, p.186) Sub-definitions therefore include to lead [sheeps], bring into order, to follow, be behind, lay snares. Thus word (dabar #1671) is an ordered or arranged thing. Another derivative is midbar (#4057) wilderness and “mouth” in Songs 4:3. |
