Footnotes
13 | Greek word ἄψινθον (ápsinthon) is the etymological root for the word "absinthe." Absinthe (or absynth) is directly associated with wormwood. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a bitter herb known for its distinctive aromatic qualities. It has been used historically in various cultures for medicinal purposes, flavoring, and even in rituals. Absinthe is a distilled, high-proof alcoholic beverage that prominently includes wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as one of its key ingredients, along with other herbs like anise and fennel. The wormwood in absinthe contributes to its characteristic bitter flavor and contains a compound called thujone, which was historically thought to have psychoactive properties. |
