Revelation 8:11

Καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ ἀστέρος λέγεται ὁ Ἄψινθος· καὶ ἐγένετο τὸ τρίτον τῶν ὑδάτων εἰς ἄψινθον, καὶ πολλοὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπέθανον ἐκ τῶν ὑδάτων, ὅτι ἐπικράνθησαν.

RBT Translation:

And the Name of the Star is called the Absinthe,¹³ and the Third One of the Waters became into absinthe, and multitudes of the Men died away from out of the Waters which were made bitter.

LITV Translation:
And the name of the star is said to be Wormwood. And the third part of the waters became changed into wormwood. And many men died from the waters, because they were bitter.

ESV Translation:
The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter.

Greek word ἄψινθον (ápsinthon) is the etymological root for the word "absinthe."

Absinthe (or absynth) is directly associated with wormwood. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a bitter herb known for its distinctive aromatic qualities. It has been used historically in various cultures for medicinal purposes, flavoring, and even in rituals. Absinthe is a distilled, high-proof alcoholic beverage that prominently includes wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as one of its key ingredients, along with other herbs like anise and fennel.

The wormwood in absinthe contributes to its characteristic bitter flavor and contains a compound called thujone, which was historically thought to have psychoactive properties.
