Footnotes
31 | The term φυλάκιον is the diminutive form of φυλακή, which generally means "guard," "watch," or "prison." The diminutive suffix -ιον conveys the sense of a smaller or more specific guarded space. In γαζοφυλάκιον (treasury), this implies a compact or confined area, such as a chest or box, where treasures or offerings were safeguarded. This usage reflects the smaller, more functional nature of the container or chamber within the Temple for collecting donations, distinguishing it from a larger, expansive treasury. |
