Greek ἐκεφαλίωσαν from κεφαλαιόω (literally "to bring under heads" or "to summarize")

  • In a positive sense, κεφαλαιόω involves focusing on the essence or chief points of something, which implies clarity and order.
  • However, when applied to people in a negative context, it can mean "reducing someone to a mere summary" or treating them in a way that ignores their full dignity, complexity, or humanity.
  • This "reduction" becomes dishonorable when it involves dismissing or disregarding their value.

Scholars struggled with this word, and so came up a sense- "strike the head" but this is simply not the meaning. Once again, Julia Smith is the only one who translated it honestly in her translation:

And again he sent to them another servant; and having stoned the same they treated in a summary manner, and sent away despised.
