The verb χορτάζω meant "to satisfy" or "to fill," particularly with food, in later Greek usage but its primary meaning is to feed, fatten cattle. Referring to feeding animals with grass or fodder (e.g., Hesiod, Works and Days 450; Aristophanes, Peace 176). In a figurative sense, it could also mean "to overwhelm" or "to satiate," whether with blows (e.g., χορτάζειν πληγαῖς) or repetitive sounds (Athenaeus 103b; Aristophanes fr. 202).
